FOSS Nepal’s Software Freedom Day 2016 celebration event turned out to be a huge success this 17th September. As every year, FOSS Nepal community had organized this event to mark the international Software Freedom Day. The event took place at Agrawal Bhawan, Kamalpokhari, among around 500 participants.
The formal inauguration of SFD was done at 11 am, along the National anthem and speeches by guest speakers. The keynote session included the speakers Mr. Prakash Neupane; the founder of Nepflights, Mr. Nama Raj Budhathoki from Kathmandu Living Labs, and our very own Dr. Mahabir Pun. The speakers focused mainly on the changing scenario in the use of open source softwares. They highlighted its use in context of Nepal and the necessity to transform the Nepalese society through technology. Dr. Mahabir Pun clarified his ideas regarding Nation Innovation Centre. He shared his visions about prosperous Nepal and the need of current generation to think for the country.
Along with these special speaker sessions, there were interesting stalls available as well. Stalls regarding Open Knowledge Community, Women in Technology, Kathmandu Living Labs, Open Source guidance labs and others as well made the event more interactive and fun. Alongside, a hackathon was also organized simultaneously with the main formal program.
The second session of the program mainly consisted of paper presentations. Paper presentations on the topics such as Mozilla community; by Mr. Roshan Gautam and Nutan Ghimire, Natural Language Processing; by Mr. Ajay Mani Paudel, Open Knowledge Nepal; by Mr. Nikesh Balami, Open Source in Virtual Reality; by Mr. Bobby Basnet and Sajesh Khadgi, and Role of Data; by Mr. Bikram Dahal were held. Mr. Mijanur Rehman, who was here representing the Bangladesh Mozilla community gave presentations regarding the Mozilla community.
Participants were provided stickers related to the open source community. All the paper presenters were provided with token of love. After the token of love distribution, the event formally ended. After a fun filled photo session, the event ended. To sum up, FOSS Nepal’s Software Freedom Day 2016 celebration was a great success.
